Memphis schools update

To quickly recap something worth watching that I mentioned earlier: the citizens of Memphis voted in March to disband the city school system, effectively forcing a merger with the surrounding suburban county system.  The merger was opposed by Republicans in the state legislature and those representing suburban areas (which, as I quipped before the election, suggested that it was a good idea) and in fact the county sued to block it.  But a Federal judge is allowing the merger to proceed, starting in 2013.

Update: well, that’s a pretty useless AP article over all; here is some reporting from a local news outlet just before and just after the ruling which gives much more useful information about what the issues are.  And a later article has some quotes from the involved parties.  Other views here.
